FAQ

How do I inflate my inflatable kayak?
Use the included hand pump or a compatible electric pump with a high-volume nozzle. Most kayaks should be inflated to 1.5–2.5 PSI for the main chambers and up to 10–15 PSI for drop-stitch floor sections (where applicable). Refer to the inflation guide in your manual — do not exceed the maximum PSI listed for your specific model. Inflate on dry land and allow 10–15 minutes for the kayak to settle before checking final pressure.

What PSI should I inflate my kayak to?
Target PSI varies by model and chamber. Main air chambers typically require 1.5–2.5 PSI; drop-stitch floors require higher pressure (10–15 PSI). The correct PSI for your kayak is listed in the product specifications and in the included manual. Under-inflation reduces performance and stability; over-inflation can stress seams.

Is a pump included with the kayak?
Pump inclusion varies by product. Check the "Package Includes" section on the product page before ordering. Most kayaks include a hand pump; some higher-end models may include a pressure gauge or electric pump. If a pump is not included, we recommend a dual-action hand pump or a 12V electric kayak pump.

What water types is this kayak suitable for?
Suitability varies by model. Most entry-level and recreational inflatable kayaks are rated for calm flatwater — lakes, slow-moving rivers, protected bays, and coastal waters with minimal chop. Higher-pressure drop-stitch models may handle Class I–II moving water. Water type suitability is listed in the specifications section of each product page. Never use a recreational inflatable kayak in Class III+ rapids, open ocean swells, or tidal currents.

How many people can fit in the kayak?
Capacity — both person count and total weight limit — is listed in the specifications section of each product page. Do not exceed the listed weight capacity as this affects stability, performance, and safety. For tandem kayaks, weight capacity applies to the combined total of all occupants and gear.

What is the weight capacity of this kayak?
Weight capacity varies by model and is listed in the specifications section of each product page. For safe operation, stay comfortably below the maximum listed capacity — operating near maximum weight reduces freeboard (the distance between the waterline and the top of the kayak) and makes the boat more susceptible to swamping in rough conditions.

How long does the kayak take to set up?
Setup time depends on the model. A basic single-chamber recreational kayak can be inflated and ready in 10–15 minutes with a hand pump. A multi-chamber tandem with a high-pressure drop-stitch floor may take 20–30 minutes. Electric pumps significantly reduce setup time for larger models.

Can I use this kayak for fishing?
Many models in our catalog are designed for fishing use and include D-rings for gear attachment, fishing rod holder compatibility, and stable flat-bottom floors. Fishing suitability is noted in the product title and description. For dedicated fishing use, look for models with a wide beam (34 inches or above) and a rigid floor construction for better standing stability.

How do I store my kayak after use?
Rinse thoroughly with fresh water to remove salt, sand, and debris. Allow to dry completely — inside and out — before deflating and storing. Fold loosely rather than rolling tightly to reduce crease stress on the PVC. Store in the included carry bag in a cool, dry location away from direct sunlight and heat. Avoid storing inflated in a hot environment (car boot, garage in summer) as heat causes PVC to expand and can stress seams.

My kayak has a small leak. What should I do?
Use the repair patch kit included with the kayak. Inflate the kayak, locate the leak by applying soapy water to the surface and watching for bubbles, mark the location, fully deflate, clean and dry the area, and apply the patch per the included instructions. Allow the adhesive to cure fully (usually 24 hours) before re-inflating. If the leak is at a seam, valve, or in a location that cannot be reliably patched, contact us at support@sportnay.com with your order number and photos.

Can inflatable kayaks be used in saltwater?
Yes, most inflatable kayaks can be used in saltwater. Rinse thoroughly with fresh water after every saltwater session — salt accelerates degradation of PVC materials and valve components. Dry completely before storage. Avoid leaving the kayak in direct sun for extended periods, as UV exposure also degrades PVC over time.

Are inflatable kayaks safe?
Inflatable kayaks are safe when used within their rated specifications, with appropriate personal flotation devices (life vests), and in suitable water conditions. Always wear a properly fitted PFD when kayaking. Check the weather and water conditions before going out. Inform someone of your planned route and expected return time. Do not kayak alone in remote locations. Inflatable kayaks are not suitable for whitewater above their rated class or open ocean use.

🏄 Safety Questions

Do I need to wear a life vest when using an inflatable kayak?
Yes. A properly fitted personal flotation device (PFD/life vest) is required by law in most US states for all kayakers, and strongly recommended regardless of local regulations. Even experienced swimmers should wear a PFD on the water. Check your state's specific boating regulations before heading out.

What safety gear do I need for kayaking?
At minimum: a properly fitted PFD, a whistle or audible signaling device, and a bilge pump or bailing device. For longer trips or open water: a paddle float, a dry bag for essentials, a waterproof communication device, and a tow rope. See our Safety Gear collection for equipment we carry.

What water conditions are safe for inflatable kayaks?
Calm flatwater — lakes, slow rivers, protected bays — is the safest environment for most recreational inflatable kayaks. Avoid paddling in strong winds (above 15 mph), significant wave action, tidal currents, or water temperatures below 50°F (10°C) without appropriate protective gear. Cold water immersion is a serious hazard — dress for the water temperature, not the air temperature.
